Before the first nail
A tape measure and a few sheets of paper can tell you more than a room photograph. Begin with the space you actually have, then choose the work that belongs there.
1. Define the open area
Measure the wall width between doors, windows, or corners. Then measure the furniture below it. A console, sofa, or sideboard usually gives a more useful visual reference than the full room width. Note switches, vents, and anything that needs to remain accessible.
2. Read the full dimensions
For one piece, use its listed overall width and height. For multiple panels, add all panel widths plus the gaps you plan to leave. Three 12-inch-wide panels with two 3-inch gaps make a 42-inch-wide arrangement. The gap is part of your wall plan, even though it is not part of the artwork.
3. Try the outline first
Cut paper rectangles or circles to the stated size and temporarily position them with a wall-safe method. Look from the entry to the room and from the seat you use most. Move the outlines until the arrangement relates to the furniture without crowding nearby trim.
4. Choose a visual center
A piece above furniture can feel connected when the lower edge leaves a deliberate gap above the furniture. There is no single height that suits every room. Consider the artwork’s center, seated sightlines, ceiling height, and the furniture’s use. In a dining area, check the view while seated at the table.
5. Leave space for texture
Loose fringe needs room to hang freely, and a projecting metal or wood piece occupies depth as well as width. For mirrors, check what the surface will reflect at the planned height. A mirror that reflects a window will read differently from one facing a busy doorway.
6. Plan the fixing
Confirm the product weight and any supplied mounting information. Choose fixings suited to your particular wall construction. If the product listing does not confirm fittings, arrange them separately. For heavier or awkwardly shaped pieces, consult an installer before making holes.
